There I was, twenty one and tired, keeping an eye on the passing group of really disheveled gentlemen. I could hear them coming from a few blocks away, shouting this and that in an excitement that can only be brought upon by loads of money. As they neared my porch, a general quieting ensued. Amidst the hurried chuckles, one of the righteous gentlemen stared into my red eyes.
“G’day young man, come with us, we’re all going to be rich!”, he said with a tremolo that reeked of duty and nervousness. I can sense that he feels out of place in this river of young entrepreneurs and dirty socks.
I replied, apparently feeding the urgency of their situation as they scurried along at a heightened pace. The voices soon raised as well, and I was alone, left with a smirk of my own.

There I was, following two or three blocks behind the growing mob, carefully listening for their path but acting as though I was uninterested in the situation. I could see that at the café other people were similarly interested but, unlike me, had a reason not to follow. One particular old woman looked up from her book at me and grew a quite interesting expression. Her eyebrows shifted into an impossible angle and she exclaimed,
“Don’t even think about asking me for change! I already gave my lucky penny to the last one of you that passed by.”
I stopped for a moment to have a short chat with her, in which she claimed she was a religious woman and that she had no time for people like me. I didn’t have much time either, because I could barely hear what I was following anymore.

I spent the rest of that year in a coma.
